International Water Day in Vác
A group of international activists set off from Budapest and the surrounding area to celebrate International Water Day in Vác, a pretty market town 30 minutes away.
The plan was to help Danube protecting NGO, Göncöl Szövetség, in making a channel from the Danube to a near-by lake to improve water quality and create spawning ground for fish. We also needed to move fallen trees which caused problems when the area flooded. Everyone worked hard all day, only stopping for a ‘bring and share picnic.’
When the sun went down an enormous mushroom goulash was served to the hungry workers, thanks to Greenpeace. Then some went to explore Vác while others tasted Hungarian wine and played games. On Sunday some of us visited a local market and ate more local food!
The weekend felt like a success! We worked hard and achieved much more than Göncöl Szövetség had hoped, we met new people, had fun and even the sun shone!
Activists of the following countries were present:
- Estonia
- France
- Hungary
- Romania
- Sweden
- United Kingdom
- United States of America
